Asking for a first name separate from a last name can be a little tricky. If you capture information specifically to customize a reponse or any communication, it is best to ask for first and last separate. However, capturing information separately also tends to slightly diminish the percentage of filled out forms. Use as few fields as possible to increase information capture.

DON’T ask for a first name separate from a last name (collecting user info)

Why not if the landing page is a newsletter subscription ? I ask my visitors to enter their first name only and the email. Working OK so far.
