There are a plethora of meaningful purposes for securing additional domain names, specifically with regards to the .COM opportunities. My favorite purpose is to fence up more real estate on your industrial block. In other words, additional URLs put more space in between your company and your competitors. Buy any available yet applicable domains to both your business and and your industry.

Domain (URL) Strategies

Domains are much like real estate, so accept that the analogy will abound. Both are finite resources that revolve around locations that will eventually be exhausted. First, exhaust any and all of your .COM options before you move into .NET, but don't go any further outside of the digital continent than those designations. All others, such as .US, .BIZ, .TV and more are not going to be prominent enough to attract and retain the attention of passer byers or browsing glances. Users are more likely to forget the other designations and end up typing in your .COM and/or .NET competitor, thus thwarting your marketing efforts.

Whether your industry's search volume is the size of California or Rhode Island, you must buy up as much of the surrounding land parcels as possible. Be creative, be intuitive, stretch your boundaries and put more digital real estate between you and your competitors. If your niche within the state of California is the southern portion, then buy up as much land in San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles thereby squeezing out your competition's ability to penetrate further into your industry niche.
